As we got out, a member of the ground staff offered to take our picture with my camera. Too bad I didn't think to take off the flotation device. We don't look glamorous at all!

Back on the ground, we headed down the highway in a continuation of our circle route, bringing us to the previously mentioned national park, which surrounds Halemaumau Crater. As soon as we arrived we were greeted with some warnings about the air quality.

The visitor centre for the park is on the edge of the Halemaumau Crater, but at the opposite end from the currently open vent. There's a ring road going all the way around the top of the crater, so we headed to the car to drive around to a science station about a third of the way around circumference.

As we pulled out of the parking lot, we spotted a park ranger performing is most important duty - helping little old ladies unlock their car with the keys inside.
