That first day we made sure to do the obligatory walk along the beach.




Along the walk, we saw two or three dolphins chasing after fish in the shallow waters close to shore.




Emma seemed to have enjoyed our first day on the island. We had to head to bed early (although with the six-hour time difference it didn't feel particularly early) so that we could get up at 3am local time for the 2-hour drive up to the summit of one of Maui's two dormant volcanos.




Among the most common of suggestions we found for activities in Maui was to go to the 10,000-foot summit of Haleakala and watch the sun rise over the tops of the clouds.
