You could probably get to Washington, DC, by starting off on this road, but it turns out we were going to be passing through the lesser known Washington, PA.
Washington, Pennsylvania, is the kind of small industrial town that people like Hilary Clinton and Barrack Obama visit only when their campaign buses break down. We picked a Denny's for our breakfast stop, in part because you can build your own omelette, which resembles "real" food more than most offerings in Washington, PA.
The photo doesn't capture it, but the air was pretty thick with cigarette smoke as we waited for a table. I was coughing within 60 seconds, but the kids didn't seem to mind it at all.
Turns out we just came at the wrong time. And day. And possibly decade.
Somewhat ironically, guests have to wait in the smoking section for a non-smoking table to come free. But to be fair, once we got to the non-smoking section the air was much cleaner and we enjoyed our breakfasts.
It's hard to imagine the people at Wendy's were enjoying their breakfasts.
