[ James poses ]

James takes a break on 2nd Avenue in downtown Nashville. To be fair, it was probably more a matter of fatigue than trendiness.

[ Blue video box lights ]

The downtown core is festooned with police video cameras, but I was momentarily puzzled by the fact that some of them had flashing blue lights and some of them didn't. It turns out the flashing light means someone is actually monitoring the camera at that moment. I wonder: Does it work as a psychological deterrent to have a "we see you" light flashing on it, as opposed to leaving it a mystery as to whether the camera is being actively viewed?

[ Nashville police on scooters ]

One part of the Nashville police scene that didn't impress me was the ridiculous little scooters they had these guys riding around on. They look like they're straining a little under the load...

[ Big new Nashville condo ]

Unlike Toronto, which seems to have 30-40 new condo buildings being built at any one time, Nashville's downtown core is markedly bereft save for this giant new building being erected in the south end. James and I were divided on its apparent aesthetic appeal; I guess we'll have to wait until it's finished to decide. (We also heard that zoning restrictions are what prevented condo buildings downtown until a recent change.)

[ The sun goes down on Broadway ]

The sun was setting as we made our way down to the first of two Predators games on the trip. This is Broadway, the centre of the Nashville entertainment scene, and the big tower is an inexplicable design feature of the Predators arena. Having it located right on the main strip really helps keep the hockey experience part of the larger Nashville experience.
