Back on the tour, we get a glimpse of the narrow crawl space between the rows of cells, used by the inmates in the most infamous escape attempt in 1962.
As the tour wound down and we headed back to the boat, I noticed this view of the guard tower set against the Oakland skyline.
Back on dry land, we made our way toward Chinatown and noticed that most of the sidewalks on hilly streets (and really most of the streets are hilly!) have a gritty texture that glitters under the streetlights.
Emma tried to get this shot of us eating at Sam Wo, the Chinese restaurant first recommended by my friend Domini before I visited the city in 2004 and now a must-visit spot for anyone going to San Francisco. The dad doesn't look like he wants to be in a picture, but the son doesn't seem to mind.
It was shortly after this that a mild earthquake brought conversation to a halt in the restaurant. It was not a very strong quake, as evidenced by the fact that Emma didn't even notice it, but I thought it added a nice California touch to our trip.
