As we waited at our gate (and I use the term loosely) for our flight back to Maui, we spotted this police officer and two shackled prisoners. Luckily they were taking a different flight.
As we made the short flight back to Maui (where we needed to return in order to get our flight home), we passed over several islands that had formerly been used as bombing ranges for the US Navy. All the red soil you can see is the scarring of completely obliterated vegetation and uncontrolled erosion caused by the bombing.
We had a lot of time to kill between returning to Maui and getting our flight home, so we checked our luggage at the first opportunity and then took a cab into Kahului for some dinner. At the suggestion of one of our guidebooks, we tried a Mexican place called the Manana Garage and were pretty happy with the results. After that, it was time for sleep as we hit the red-eye back to Vancouver.
And that's pretty much it.
(Unless you want to see 250 more pictures from the helicopter ride, that is.)
