[ Lining up for a luau ]

Luaus are something that, like going to Vegas, you feel strangely compelled to try at least once. It doesn't matter how expensive or soul-sucking it is, you just have to go do it.

Luaus can be big or small, mass-produced or authentic. Our hotel set us up with a two-for-one deal for a luau at a big hotel down the strip. There were quite a lot of people lined up to get in when we arrived -- it turned out this was going to be more at the Disneyland end of the luau spectrum.

[ Me tilting my head ]

One sign this was a factory luau was the shell necklace instead of flowers. The tiki torches are a nice touch though.

[ Luau food ]

Only the best buffet food for us. (The cave behind us is actually the stage for the show.)

[ Luau show with hula girls ]

The show was a meddley of various Polynesian cultural stereotypes. Indeed, it was hard to watch the show without a slight sense of embarrassment.
