[ Tilted parking ]

Of course, with all the hills in the city you run into a problem with parking. Yes, there is a lot of parallel parking and the usual considerations (parking brakes and turning wheels in) apply. But on some side streets, they do perpendicular parking. My bet is that nobody keeps loose change in their cars...

[ Transamerica and Adult Video

]

The distinctive Transamerica building, with another, less distinguished, building in the foreground. Notice the sign (below).

[ Ready for blast off ]

Ready for blast off? What does that have to do with anything?

After this I think I went and got some food. I slept OK that night, but not before beginning to realize that having a room on the third floor facing onto a busy street isn't necessarily a super plan. If I'd had any trouble sleeping, I might have asked for a different room. But so far so good.

The next morning, I went to the cheapest car-rental place I could find on the Internet the week before (which was, amazingly, right around the corner).

[ Ocean! ]

After picking up the car, I followed my nose towards a highway, and headed southwest, hoping to get to the coastal highway that runs south towards (ultimately) Los Angeles. This was my first ocean sighting.

[ Layers ]

I thought these layers in the ground on either side of the excavated roadwaywere kind of neat.
