[ Vancouver skyline

My decision to fly to Seattle by way of Vancouver was driven mostly by not wanting to get up in time to catch the 8:30 direct flight. So I got to do a little B.C. sightseeing from the plane on the way in.

[ U.S. Immigration

]

After walking approximately 13.6 kilometers with my luggage from one side of Vancouver airport to the other (with regular stops to catch my breath and the score in the Canada-Czech Republic hockey game), I arrived at U.S. Immigration, where they had definitely been waiting up for me.

I cleared immigration and customs no problem, but security to get onto my flight to Seattle was another matter. They x-rayed my bag (as did security at Pearson) and they objected to my nail scissors (which security at Pearson did not).

[ The offending

shears. ]

The offending shears, with finger for scale. Never again the two shall meet. My apologies for the blurry shot - between the tears of anguish over my beloved nail scissors being rended so heartlessly from my personal effects and the antsy looks of the security guard who was going to march them off in shackles, it was hard to keep the camera still.

[ Watching the game

]

Although there were not actually too many people at the gate when I got there, all eyes were on the hockey game as it went into overtime. Even the gate agents were watching the game, and I suspect they might even have held the flight had it not been decided quickly in the extra period.
