[ Flat volcanic runoff ]

Of course all the Hawaiian islands are formed from volcanic outflow, but the Big Island is the sole remaining active volcano in the chain. As a result, its scenery (especially on this, the dry side of the island) most clearly illustrates the kind of terrain left behind by volcanic activity.


[ Rock graffiti ]

On the highway heading north out of Kona, there is a stretch of many miles where the equivalent of highway overpass graffiti is marked out with white rocks (presumbly lugged to the site from elsewhere on the island).


[ Hapuna Beach ]

That afternoon we visited Hapuna Beach, one of the few fine white sand beaches in Hawaii.
