Along the way from Waipio Valley to Hilo, we stopped at Akaka Falls, where we found half of the walking path was closed.




It's too bad half the park was closed, because what we could see was quite pretty -- these were just some of the many small waterfalls you pass on the way to the main lookout.

We were advised by the activities co-ordinator at our hotel to take a short detour off the main highway just outside Hilo so that we could see the "scenic route" along the northeast coast of the island. The main scenic feature seemed to be dense forest.
