[ My view ]

Across the street from my hotel room was a police station. It's hard to see in this shot, but the mid-sized building at the centre of the picture has a helipad area and I was soon to learn that it sees regular use.

[ LAPD helipad ]

The regular users came from the building marked with the red arrow. That building, and more specifically the roof area, houses the aviation unit of the LAPD, which is to say a large number of police helicopters. Every night they were out buzzing around, and every night at least one would come in and shoot practice landings on the helipad in the picture above. As they took off, they passed right by my window. Loudly.

[ Lobby ]

The lobby of the New Otani had some pretty tacky dˇcor, including these coloured-glass 'bits' hanging under the open skylight. The area beneath it is the lounge where we watched Game 2 of the Flames/Lightning series.

[ Oriental ]

The oriental atmosphere promised on the hotel's web site was not really in evidence, save for this small (and apparently temporary) display.
