The only formal conference event of the first full day that we were in town was the cocktail reception at the host newspaper's headquarters.

VG building lobby ]](oslo053.jpg)
This is merely the lobby of their building. It's a real eye-opening experience to see newspaper buildings around the world, and then compare them to what we have in Canada. The Globe's building is not in the same league (neither are any of the other Canadian newspaper buildings I've been in).

Wineglass holder ]](oslo054.jpg)
I'd never seen one of these before, and I admit I was a little hesitant to use it, but the wineglass holders they had for perching your glass with your plate as you stood around talking to people worked pretty well. Nice idea.

Rain ]](oslo055.jpg)
The forecast for our trip was cool and rainy, but the first day and a half had been sunny and warm/hot. The first full day of the conference, however, was marked by the expected rain.

Right around the corner from the hotel (and from the newspaper building from the night before) is the Schibsted building, which was housing the conference itself.
This was another nice building, with lots of glass and (therefore) natural light. Andrew's lurking in the background, having arrived much earlier than the rest of us. Keener.
